After studying and doing his doctorate at the Hannover Medical School, Hashim Abdul-Khaliq initially worked for three years in the neonatology department of the Auguste Viktoria Hospital in Berlin and then for twelve years at the German Heart Center Berlin in the Clinic for Congenital Heart Defects – Pediatric Cardiology, most recently for six years as senior physician.

Dr. Howaida El-Said is the director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and a clinical professor of pediatrics at UC San Diego. She is one of only two ABIM-certified adult congenital heart disease specialists in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside counties.

Dr. El-Said completed her pediatrics residency, pediatric cardiology fellowship, imaging fellowship and interventional pediatric cardiology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She trained under the founder and father of interventional pediatric cardiology, Dr. Charles Mullins, which gave her vast exposure to the most complex adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) cases.

After completing her medical training in 2000, Dr. El-Said became an associate pediatric cardiologist at Baylor before coming to San Diego. She performs close to half of the diagnostic and interventional procedures at the Rady Children’s cardiac catheterization laboratory. Thirty percent of her cardiac catheterization procedures are ACHD cases, including percutaneous valve implantations.

She remains an active clinical researcher, having authored almost 50 publications.

Mark Galantowicz, MD, is the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Co-Director of The Heart Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. And also a Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and is the recipient of the Murray D. Lincoln Endowed Chair in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Galantowicz was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship to conduct molecular biology research at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He is certified in both Pediatric and Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Dr. Zahid Amin joined our group from Children’s Hospital of Georgia, where he was endowed chair and section chief in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology. Prof. Hijazi has nearly 40 years of experience in Congenital Cardiology and has pioneered several ground-breaking Interventional procedures in the field. He is an internationally recognized leader in the nonsurgical repair of congenital and structural heart defects in children and adults and in the development of novel trans-catheter devices. He graduated in Medicine ‘cum laude’ in 1986 from University La Sapienza, Rome, Italy and became a specialist in Cardiac Surgery ‘cum laude’ at University of Bologna, Italy. Dr Bedair is the clinical lead for the adult congenital heart disease services and has worked at the Bristol Heart Institute since 2014. She qualified and trained in cardiology at Cairo University, completing Masters and Doctorate degrees before moving to the United Kingdom for further training in 2007. After obtaining specialist registration in 2013, she gained more experience in congenital interventional procedures through a one-year interventional fellowship at Evelina London children’s hospital. Her sub-specialty interest is diagnostic and interventional congenital cardiac catheterisation. She is also responsible for regional training in adult congenital heart disease and has experience in clinical governance leadership.

Dr Giovanni Di Salvo qualified in Italy in 1996, going on to obtain his certificate of perfection in Medical Emergencies and to specialise in cardiology. He gained master’s degree in medical imaging in 2002 at the Katholieke University of Leuven, Belgium, and his PhD in cardio-respiratory physiopathology and associated biotechnologies in 2004.

Dr Di Salvo has worked across the globe in a variety of institutions, including Naples and Saudi Arabia, before joining the Trust in 2016 as a lead consultant in paediatric echocardiography. In July 2017, Dr Di Salvo became the lead for paediatric cardiology research at Royal Brompton Hospital, and in October 2016 became an honorary senior lecturer at Imperial College, London.

Dr. Ravikumar is a well-known interventional cardiologist with an experience of over 20 years in performing interventional cardiology procedures such as primary and elective Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCIs), Second generation stents, Valvuloplasties, to name a few.
